Magic Motif Series
This series of 8 were painted between March and August 2020, during the first wave of the C19 pandemic, and following our trip to New Mexico in February. I was on the lookout for a southwest image to paint, and one night I was listening to Robin Trower, and there it was. (Trower fans may recognize “Sand Dunes” as based on a Trower album cover.) As I sketched the outline I imagined several other possibilities, so I decided to paint a series based on the motif.
I had a few rules for myself: 1) Always start with the same outline. 2) Rotate the canvas until something presents itself. 3) It’s okay to depart from the outlines if it improves the painting. The paintings are displayed in the order they were painted.
